The Dangerous Goods Sea Awareness course provides you with information about the safety and practical aspects of transporting dangerous goods in the maritime industry. This course will also allow you to gain a sound understanding of all legal requirements which apply to the job.

Topics covered in this course include:

• The basic processes and procedures involved in preparing dangerous goods for sea transport.
• Classification of dangerous goods, including the properties and risks of each dangerous goods class/division.
• Identification of dangerous goods through use of labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s).
• Use of the Dangerous Goods List included in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
• Packaging, marking, labelling and placarding requirements for packages and containers being prepared for sea transport.
• Stowage, segregation and restraint considerations and procedures.
• Documentation requirements, including the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form (MO41).
• Transport considerations for dangerous goods, including shipping line procedures and documentation, acceptance procedures, transportation of marine pollutants, and identification of hidden/undeclared/misdeclared dangerous goods.
• Basic emergency procedures and reporting of hazards.
• It is internationally accepted, and meets the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and Shipping Australia’s requirements for recognition under the Australian Maritime Safety Organisation (AMSA)’s regulations.

This course is recommended for personnel whose job roles involve handling and preparing dangerous goods for sea transport. It is also appropriate for freight forwarders in co-ordinating roles and personnel taking bookings for freight/passengers.

It meets the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and Shipping Australia’s requirements for recognition under the Australian Maritime Safety Organisation’s (AMSA) regulations for personnel taking bookings for freight or passengers, and Freight Forwarders in co-ordinating roles.

Note: Personnel carrying out function-specific job roles involved in sea transport may require additional training and qualification.

• An online simulation of the Dangerous Goods List used by workers to find what rules and regulations apply to each dangerous good being transported by sea.
• Additional printable learning materials for port or terminal operator personnel, which provides information specific to shipping company practices.
• A theory assessment which tests each student’s understanding of the information provided in the Learners Guide.
